Good afternoon Everyone,

I was lucky enough to get the chance to tag along with some of the members of the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) this morning on a flight over the Lakes & Coorong and here are some of my photos. It struck me how privileged we are to live and work in such an incredibly beautiful and important region! I was also reminded of the scale of dramatic and permanent change we have made to our environment and what a responsibility we have to look after it! Sobering!

Enjoy the sunshine!

Best Wishes, Amelia

Kerry Kriger’s US based Save the Frogs! official website (www.savethefrogs.com) reported that there were over 150 events for Save the Frogs Day in 27 countries …. and Mount Compass was part of the action last Friday with Regina Durbridge from the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association and her fantastic live frog displays. The Lakes Hub helped out on the day and although we didn’t get a huge turn out it was good fun!

Once the renovations to the boardwalk at Mount Compass Wetland have taken place we will organise a guided tour.

Here is a photo (left) of an Echidna I spotted on my way to work this morning on Winery Road – made my day! I have submitted the observation to Echidna Watch at www.echidna.edu.au

Good afternoon Everyone!

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather! There is so much going on at the moment I cant pick just one thing to talk about so here goes:

The Currency Creek Regulator Removal process has begun with a barge arriving on site last week and boating exclusion zone being enforced.

I am glad to announce that the presentations given at the 2013 World Wetlands Day event at Signal Point are finally on the web! Download them here

Don’t miss Thursday’s Talking Heads session from 4-6pm with DEWNR and Alexandrina Council staff about woody weed control (including Aleppo Pines) on Northern Hindmarsh Island. There is also the Ringbalin ceremonies occurring through April and a host of other up-coming training opportunities including the Eco-wise Action workshops I am running in Goolwa in May and still eagerly anticipating some bookings!

Most importantly don’t miss Grant funding opportunities available, page 3.

Enjoy the rest of the week! Best Wishes, Amelia

Last Friday evening Andrew Dawes & I took a Lakes Hub stall to the Meningie Fair. We shared a tent with the Meningie Progress Association (who were selling freshly cooked Coorong Mullet sandwiches), and the Ostrich soon to be installed on the Meningie Foreshore as a Tourist attraction- telling the story of the famous “Birdman of the Coorong”.

It was a great evening, perfect weather, heaps of free fun for the kids and lots of good food, as well as a great opportunity to chat to a number of Meningie locals and visitors to the area about the Community Revegetation Program and the Lakes Hub.

I am always keen to get out and talk to community members about the Lakes Hub.

I hope you all had a safe & Happy Easter! Back into all things environmental, I am heartened to read about Australian scientists highlighting links between long-term conservation of natural resources and reducing poverty. Over-use of natural resources is something we humans are really good at. Last Weeks Nature Journal included an interesting article by Australian scientists:

“The protection of Earth’s life support system and poverty reduction must be the twin priorities…The stable functioning of Earth systems, including the atmosphere, oceans, forests, waterways, biodiversity and biogeochemical cycles, is a pre-requisite for a thriving global society.” They conclude that ‘Governments must impose radical limits on everything from water use to greenhouse gases if they want to have any chance of ending global poverty’.

Closer to home, the Conservation Council of SA have launched a campaign to get large scale renewable Energy in SA, the campaign is called: Green Our Grid or Feed Our Greed? The Choice is Ours, click here to find out more.
