Bulletin 147: Winter Planting and Orange-bellied Parrots

Bulletin 147

This wonderful rain we are having will mean a great start to this years planting program and both the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association and the Milang District Community Association have been busy with preparations, see page 2. The CLLMM Vegetation Team at DEWNR have also been busy preparing for the Commercial Planting Program which will see another 250,000 plants going in around the Lakes & Coorong this year.

On a different but exciting note there have been some recent sightings of juvenile Orange-bellied Parrots including a possible sighting on the Fleurieu Peninsula! Confirmed sightings have been at West Gippsland, Warnambool and Werribee. The Orange-bellied Parrot National Recovery Team Volunteer Coordinators are holding official surveys this weekend (see page 3 for details) and remind bird watchers “that if you are fortunate enough to come across the parrots you need to be patient, watch carefully and try to read band details and minimise, preferably eliminate, the potential for disturbance.”

Happy Bird Watching!
Best Wishes, Amelia

Bulletin 146: From the Air

Bulletin 146

Good afternoon Everyone,

I was lucky enough to get the chance to tag along with some of the members of the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) this morning on a flight over the Lakes & Coorong and here are some of my photos. It struck me how privileged we are to live and work in such an incredibly beautiful and important region! I was also reminded of the scale of dramatic and permanent change we have made to our environment and what a responsibility we have to look after it! Sobering!

Enjoy the sunshine!

Best Wishes, Amelia

Bulletin 145: Echidnas and Frogs

Bulletin 145

Click the image to download (pdf)

Kerry Kriger’s US based Save the Frogs! official website (www.savethefrogs.com) reported that there were over 150 events for Save the Frogs Day in 27 countries …. and Mount Compass was part of the action last Friday with Regina Durbridge from the Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association and her fantastic live frog displays. The Lakes Hub helped out on the day and although we didn’t get a huge turn out it was good fun!

Once the renovations to the boardwalk at Mount Compass Wetland have taken place we will organise a guided tour.

Here is a photo (left) of an Echidna I spotted on my way to work this morning on Winery Road – made my day! I have submitted the observation to Echidna Watch at www.echidna.edu.au

Best Wishes, Amelia

Bulletin 144: With Sadness

Bulletin 144

Click the image to download (pdf)

It is with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Uncle Tom Trevorrow.

On behalf of everyone at the Lakes Hub, Milang Old School House Community Centre and Milang & District Community Association I would like to express deepest sympathy to Aunty Ellen Trevorrow and to the families of the late Tom Trevorrow, Ngarrindjeri Elder, Leader and inspiration.

Uncle Tom showed us the way; through reconciliation in action, care for country and love and respect for one another.

He will be missed by us all.
