Removing the barrages would turn Lower Lakes into a dead sea

THE barrages at the mouth of the Murray River are an essential cornerstone of healthy, working rivers throughout the Murray-Darling Basin. To remove them would be a calamitous act of vandalism that would hurt every person, animal and plant that relies on healthy, working rivers across the basin.

Lakes Ecoskill training program wins award

At the Adult Learners Week Dinner the Milang Old School House Community Centre received the Award for Learning Program of the Year 2010 for the Lakes Ecoskill Network, a Conservation and Land Management Training Program. A Certificate, crystal award, $1000 cheque and $125 training voucher were presented to Karyn Bradford, Coordinator of MOSHCC, Carole Richardson Goolwa to Wellington LAP project officer and trainer and Jo McPhee course participant. Congratulations to all involved and particular thanks to Shirley Smith, project manager and Deb Walkley from TAFE SA who have developed such an innovative program.

The Department for Water is reminding residents and visitors to the River Murray downstream of Blanchetown to enjoy the River, but remain on the lookout for signs of possible riverbank collapse, despite recent increases in water levels.

The Riverbank Collapse Hotline (1800 751 970) is a free 24‐hour hotline that has been established for the public to report any observed signs of a potential collapse, and to obtain information.

Further information is also available online by searching “riverbank collapse” at www.sa.gov.au.

The Department for Water came into effect today replacing the Department for Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation. A new websitehttp://www.waterforgood.sa.gov.au/ was also released today and contains a range of different services and products. On the main page you can access the latest River Murray Water Resources Update and the Users Guide to the 2010-11 River Murray Drought Water Allocation Decision Framework.

The Rivers, reservoirs and groundwater link on the top of the webpage http://www.waterforgood.sa.gov.au/rivers-reservoirs-aquifers/river-murray/ also contains a lot of useful information, including links to media releases.

Proposed Murray Darling Basin Plan

Murray-Darling Basin Authority have recently added new information to their website that you might be interested in.

The latest news release outlines additional consultation on the proposed Murray-Darling Basin Plan:

In April this year, a forum was held with peak bodies and government and science agencies. More than 200 people from across the Basin attended the forum for an update on the Basin planning process. The Minister for Environment and Conservation, Minister for the River Murray, Minister for Water stood at the regulator at Clayton Bay with locals on Thursday 17th June. He listened. He asked questions. He responded. People had travelled from Mannum, Murray Bridge, Langhorne Creek, Milang and Finniss to be at Clayton Bay for the meeting.
